LEVEL 1. DRONE - Teacher & school leaders training to promote Digital liteRacy & combat the spread of disinfOrmation among vulNerable groups of adolEscents

BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.7. Digital ecosystem, disinformation and the need for media literacy and critical thinking

What problem does it address?

Disinformation, spread via digital media, threatens Europe's social cohesion, democratic participation and the well-being of youth and children. Especially now with the advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, fake news can reach their audience in unprecedented pace. Nonetheless, some target groups are affected by disinformation more than others: people facing socio-economic challenges, youth with a migrant background, and people living in rural areas are further exposed. Teachers and school leaders are in the forefront of educating youth and children on how to respond to disinformation but they lack appropriate training.

What does it propose?

The project DRONE - Teacher & school leaders training to promote Digital liteRacy & combat the spread of disinfOrmation among vulNerable groups of adolEscents addresses disinformation through a whole-school approach, based on the collaboration of teachers, school leaders, parents and students and further adapted to the individual needs of schools and their ecosystems in an inclusive, scalable manner. The issues of disinformation online are further entrenched for students in vulnerable conditions as they can increase inequality in education and online and offline settings in general.

Why is it an inspiring practice?
  • It introduces a three-layered approach in research, training and community building to counter disinformation, bringing together teachers, school leaders, parents and students
  • It enables participants to solve problems in real life situations, to learn from each other and from their diverse experiences, and to reflect on their practice and learning process
  • It offers realistic case studies and scenarios from diverse and vulnerable youth to help participants understand a range of different situations and contexts.

LEVEL 2. EXPLORE BEST PRACTICE

Introduction

Funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, the DRONE project addresses the issue of digital disinformation and low digital literacy in European adolescents, in particular those from vulnerable backgrounds. It also examines schools' and communities' preparedness to deal with digital disinformation and seeks to build their resilience to mitigate the impact of face news in their students' lives and decision-making. Through the development of an Ambassadors' Network, the project extends the scope of the project’s action, promoting collaboration and the exchange of knowledge among countries in Europe.

  • A.6. Deficits in democratic participation, representation and inclusive governance

The Challenge

What social issue does it address?

The spread of fake news among children and adolescents has much more serious risks than noticed. It affects their decision-making in many areas of life and undermines their democratic engagement. AI-enabled disinformation obscures the situation even further. In this context, critical digital literacy skills are needed more than ever and schools play a significant role in cultivating them.

Why is it important?

It promotes school and community engagement as a core element of counter-disinformation strategies, aiming at strengthening digital literacy competences among teachers, school leaders, parents and students and influencing school policies and practices. The open-source, multilingual resources developed within the DRONE Project offer a best practice for European education systems struggling with online disinformation and seeking to promote digital citizenship in their students.

How does it contribute to the BRIDGE Challenge?

The project responds to A7 Challenge by offering a comprehensive, practice-oriented and scalable approach to tackle disinformation among children and adolescents. It analyses the ecosystem behind disinformation, concluding that targeted, multi-stakeholders' training to teachers, school leaders and parents and their collaboration are a strong foundation in the formulation of a joint response against fake news.

How does it work?

The project offers evidence-based training, 3 targeted handbooks for teachers, school leaders and parents, as well as an interactive e-learning environment for parents and youngsters of school age. The three-layered-ecosystem of the DRONE Project targets disinformation, human development and change in whole schools.
