BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.6. Deficits in democratic participation, representation and inclusive governance
Across Europe, many young people—especially those in rural or marginalised communities—are disengaged from democratic life due to distrust in institutions, economic uncertainty and digital divides. This disengagement fuels apathy and, in some cases, radicalisation, while participation gaps are deepened by geographic and social inequalities.
GET THE NET builds young people's civic skills and confidence through Youth Working Groups, Training of Trainers, simulations of municipal councils, web radio/podcasts, workshops and creative activities. Youth co-designs and leads activities, engaging directly with local authorities to influence real decision-making across 10+ European countries.
GET THE NET is an Erasmus+ initiative empowering young people (15–30) to become active citizens through non-formal education, creative media and direct engagement with local democratic institutions. Coordinated by YOU IN EUROPE with 10+ partner NGOs and municipalities, it combines Training of Trainers, Youth Working Groups, council simulations, podcasts/web radio and community events, reaching thousands of young people across more than 10 European countries between 2024 and 2026.
Young Europeans, particularly in rural or disadvantaged areas, are increasingly disengaged from democratic processes due to distrust in institutions, economic insecurity and digital divides. This disengagement is linked to rising apathy, exclusion and vulnerability to radicalisation and populist mobilisation.
Active youth participation is essential for resilient, inclusive democracies. Without meaningful opportunities to engage, young people's trust in institutions erodes further, weakening social cohesion and leaving space for extremism and exclusion to grow.
GET THE NET directly targets A6 by creating real, youth-led spaces—working groups, simulations and media platforms—through which young people practice civic skills and influence decisions in their municipalities and beyond.
The project trains youth workers, forms Youth Working Groups that co-design civic activities, and runs council/court simulations so young people experience democratic procedures first-hand. Web radio, podcasts, workshops and sports events enable youth to express their views and build cross-cultural dialogue, while local authorities and civil society partners provide platforms for real engagement.
