LEVEL 1. ReIncluGen: Gender Inclusion and Empowerment

BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.5. Discrimination, racism and sociocultural polarisation, including hate speech

What problem does it address?

Persistent patterns of discrimination and exclusion affecting migrant women and girls in several European countries limit their social inclusion, participation and recognition as active agents in the public sphere. These patterns manifest themselves both overtly and subtly through institutional and symbolic exclusion, as well as polarised discourse in digital environments.

What does it propose?

ReIncluGen addresses the inequalities and structural violence affecting migrant women and girls in Europe through an intersectional approach based on Participatory Action Research. The project co-develops innovative ways to promote gender empowerment and social inclusion, while also producing interactive training resources, digital publications and policy recommendations.

Why is it an inspiring practice?
  • Positions migrant women and girls as producers of knowledge.
  • Conducts comparative studies of sociopolitical contexts internationally.
  • Promotes co-creation and co-development processes for social transformation.
  • Combines participatory research, training and knowledge transfer to society.
  • Fosters collaboration between universities, civil society organisations and migrant women.
  • Produces open educational resources.

LEVEL 2. EXPLORE BEST PRACTICE

Introduction

Rethinking Gender Inclusion and Empowerment through Participatory Research (ReIncluGen) is a European project that uses Participatory Action Research to analyse and promote gender empowerment from a situated intersectional perspective grounded in the experiences of migrant women and girls in Europe. It also examines the influence of media discourse and digital cultures on their representation and develops participatory tools, training resources, publications and public policy recommendations.

The Challenge

What social issue does it address?

Patterns of discrimination and exclusion affecting migrant women and girls in Europe limit their social inclusion, participation and recognition as active agents in the public sphere. This situation is compounded by intersecting factors such as gender, origin, social class and identity, which are also reflected in polarised discourse in digital environments.

Why is it important?

Structural discrimination affecting migrant women and girls operates through institutional, social and cultural mechanisms that limit their participation, recognition and sense of belonging. Adopting a participatory and intersectional approach helps to address patterns of exclusion, racism and polarisation, fostering a more inclusive and cohesive society.

How does it contribute to the BRIDGE Challenge?

ReIncluGen contributes to Challenge A.5 through an intersectional analysis of discrimination affecting migrant women and girls and its reproduction in social and media discourse. Through participatory research and the co-creation of resources, it promotes their recognition as active agents and provides tools to address racism, stereotypes and exclusion.

How does it work?

ReIncluGen adopts a participatory and critical approach aimed at rethinking gender empowerment. To this end, it analyses discourse in digital media, incorporates participatory visual techniques and promotes collective reflection. The project culminated in the production of reports, policy recommendations, a collection of good practices, specialised publications and an interactive digital training platform.
