LEVEL 1. Intersectionality in Higher Education (InterHEd)

BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.4. Fragmented management of cultural diversity and weak institutionalisation of intercultural dialogue

What problem does it address?

The diversification of university communities has created educational environments characterised by greater cultural, linguistic, ethnic, religious, gender and socio-economic diversity. However, inclusion policies addressing this reality from an intersectional perspective remain insufficient, leaving institutions ill-equipped to address multiple inequalities comprehensively and across all areas of their work.

What does it propose?

InterHEd proposes a model of educational and institutional innovation that integrates an intersectional approach into Higher Education through the development of innovative methodologies, training tools and institutional recommendations that foster comprehensive diversity management and intercultural dialogue.

Why is it an inspiring practice?
  • It proposes an innovative model for institutional policies in Higher Education.
  • It combines research, training and educational innovation.
  • It provides Open Educational Resources (OER).

LEVEL 2. EXPLORE BEST PRACTICE

Introduction

InterHEd is an Erasmus+ project that promotes the integration of an intersectional approach into Higher Education through the development of innovative methodologies and training tools aimed at strengthening comprehensive diversity management and intercultural dialogue. It combines applied research, training, the production of open educational resources and the development of institutional recommendations aimed at mainstreaming intersectionality across teaching practices and university structures relating to inclusion, diversity and equity.

  • Coordinating organisation: Universitat de Vic - Universitat Central de Catalunya (Spain)
  • Participating countries: France (FR), Germany (DE), Poland (PL), Spain (ES)
  • Duration: 1 October 2023 - 30 September 2026
  • BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.4. Fragmented management of cultural diversity and weak institutionalisation of intercultural dialogue
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • SDG 4: Quality Education
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
  • SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Secondary Challenges
  • A.1. Structural and intersectional inequalities that shape inclusion and social cohesion
  • A.2. Gap between regulatory frameworks, institutional discourses and actual inclusion practices

The Challenge

What social issue does it address?

The growing diversity within Higher Education institutions does not always translate into effective and intersectional inclusion policies. As a result, institutions continue to lack comprehensive and cross-cutting approaches to addressing the multiple inequalities present in university communities.

Why is it important?

Strengthening institutional capacity to manage diversity in a more coherent, inclusive and sustainable way helps build universities capable of promoting equity, social justice and intercultural dialogue.

How does it contribute to the BRIDGE Challenge?

InterHEd addresses Challenge A.4 by contributing to the institutionalisation of inclusion and intercultural dialogue within European universities and fostering more equitable, participatory educational environments that are responsive to the multiple forms of inequality and discrimination that persist.

How does it work?

InterHEd combines applied research, identification of promising practices, development of innovative methodologies and production of educational resources and institutional recommendations. Through training activities and processes of reflection and evaluation, it provides tools for integrating intersectionality into teaching, curricula, assessment and university policies.
