LEVEL 1. TOGETHER – TOwards a cultural understandinG of thE oTHER

BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.4. Fragmented management of cultural diversity and weak institutionalisation of intercultural dialogue

What problem does it address?

Europe's social cohesion is increasingly eroded by the perception of migration and cultural diversity as a threat to stability. While an increasing number of Europeans have embraced cultural diversity as a defining feature of contemporary societies, others perceive the coexistence of different cultural identities as a challenge rather than an opportunity.

What does it propose?

The project TOGETHER - TOwards a cultural understandinG of thE oTHER is designed to address social fragmentation and foster meaningful intercultural dialogue in today’s multicultural European and Mediterranean environment. Building on the shared values and cultural heritage that connect diverse communities, TOGETHER seeks to promote dialogue as a means of recognising both diversity and common ground, while strengthening social cohesion and contributing to more inclusive societies.

Why is it an inspiring practice?
  • It empowers communities and institutions to foster intercultural dialogue and shared European values
  • It leverages cultural heritage and embeds intercultural dialogue in local agendas for sustainable development
  • It develops educational tools and multi-stakeholders training programmes, addressed to students, teachers, NGOs and community organizations as well as local authorities
  • It introduces Intercultural Ambassadors as role models against social fragmentation and equips them with the necessary competences in order to bring about change in their communities
  • It promotes mutual understanding and reinforce social and economic development through cultural cooperation.

LEVEL 2. EXPLORE BEST PRACTICE

Introduction

TOGETHER is an Erasmus+ project that addresses the need to empower communities and institutions to foster intercultural dialogue and shared European values by leveraging cultural heritage and innovative training resources. It brings together partners from five countries to promote mutual understanding, social cohesion, and sustainable social development.

  • Coordinating organisation: CulturePolis
  • Participating countries: Cyprus (CY), Georgia (GE), Greece (GR), Italy (IT), Lebanon (LB)
  • Duration: 2020-2022
  • BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.4. Fragmented management of cultural diversity and weak institutionalisation of intercultural dialogue
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
Secondary Challenges
  • A.1. Structural and intersectional inequalities that shape inclusion and social cohesion

The Challenge

What social issue does it address?

TOGETHER addresses social fragmentation and exclusion in increasingly multicultural communities by tackling cultural misunderstanding, stereotypes and weak intercultural interaction, and by strengthening local capacity to use intercultural dialogue and shared cultural heritage to build social cohesion, inclusion and a sense of belonging.

Why is it important?

Negative views of diversity are reflected by national and European reports and are further exacerbated post-COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic crises, which expose deep seated inequalities and reduce opportunities for intercultural exchange.

How does it contribute to the BRIDGE Challenge?

TOGETHER responds to Challenge A4 by bringing to the forefront the problem of social fragmentation and the lack of intercultural dialogue in European and Mediterranean societies. The project offers a training methodology and a set of training material, embedded into an e-platform, which directly enhance intercultural education and contribute to sustainable human development and global equality.

How does it work?

TOGETHER has conducted a needs assessment in each participating country which revealed a lack of intercultural skills, awareness and appropriate tools and resources that enable effective intercultural work. To address these gaps, the partners have developed educational tools and multi-stakeholders training for local actors in order to equip them as intercultural ambassadors and to empower them to bring about change in their environment.
