LEVEL 1. PROMIS – Promoting Social Inclusion Skills

BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.7. Digital ecosystem, disinformation and the need for media literacy and critical thinking

What problem does it address?

In a post-truth information environment, European youth and Higher Education students lack the media literacy and critical thinking skills to resist polarised, stigmatising online narratives about marginalised groups, while university curricula rarely offer systematic, research-based training on social inclusion and anti-discrimination.

What does it propose?

PROMIS developed a three-pillar open educational ecosystem: the BUILD research-based curriculum (six social inclusion modules), a Gamification Manual applying the Octalysis model and self-determination theory, and a permanent gamified online platform where students and professionals build critical media literacy and inclusion competences.

Why is it an inspiring practice?
  • • Pairs every curriculum module with its own named, theory-grounded gamification strategy (Octalysis model).
  • • Covers six distinct social inclusion topics in one coherent, cross-referenced curriculum.
  • • Publishes outputs with registered ISBNs, making them formally citable academic resources, not just web content.
  • • Explicitly separates results already achieved from outcomes still to be monitored, avoiding overclaiming.
  • • Integrates Western, Southern and Eastern European evidence in a single transnational curriculum.

What can visitors learn?
• How to pair research-based curriculum content with a named, evidence-based gamification framework.
• How to co-produce a transnational curriculum with one specialist institution leading each thematic module.
• How to distinguish design-level outputs (what was built) from outcome-level results (what changed) in reporting.
• How an intersectional lens can shape modules on migration, poverty, gender, disability and autism together.
• How to keep educational resources open-access and permanently hosted beyond the project funding cycle.

LEVEL 2. EXPLORE BEST PRACTICE

Introduction

PROMIS built a transnational, open-access educational ecosystem across 7 institutions in 6 countries: the BUILD curriculum (6 social inclusion modules), a Gamification Manual, and the gamified platform promis.education. It equips Higher Education students and professionals with media literacy and critical thinking skills to counter discriminatory online narratives

  • Coordinating organisation: Babeş-Bolyai University (Romania)
  • Participating countries: France (FR), Italy (IT), Lithuania (LT), Netherlands (NL), Poland (PL), Romania (RO)
  • Duration: 2019-2022
  • BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.7. Digital ecosystem, disinformation and the need for media literacy and critical thinking
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • SDG 4: Quality Education
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
  • SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Secondary Challenges
  • A.1. Structural and intersectional inequalities that shape inclusion and social cohesion
  • A.3. Educational gaps throughout educational trajectories, including higher education

The Challenge

What social issue does it address?

European youth and Higher Education students lack the media literacy and critical thinking skills to resist polarised online narratives about marginalised groups, while university curricula rarely provide systematic, research-based training on social inclusion, anti-discrimination and critical media consumption.

Why is it important?

Misinformation causes greater harm to those already marginalised, while people with higher educational capital are better equipped to resist it, deepening existing structural inequalities in social cohesion and democratic participation.

How does it contribute to the BRIDGE Challenge?

PROMIS builds media literacy and critical thinking directly into Higher Education by producing a peer-reviewed curriculum, an evidence-based gamification framework, and a permanent open-access platform, positioning universities as the key institutional actor for this BRIDGE Challenge.

How does it work?

Students and professionals access six research-based modules on social inclusion, each paired with a specific gamification strategy (Octalysis model, self-determination theory), through a modular online platform combining theoretical input, case-based activities and self-assessment quizzes.

What might inspire you?
Ideas for adaptation
  1. Pair every curriculum module with its own named gamification strategy.
  2. Ground game design in a named model: Octalysis, not intuition alone
  3. Cover six inclusion topics in one coherent, cross-referenced curriculum.
  4. Publish outputs with ISBNs so they are formally citable, not just online.
  5. Have one specialist institution own one thematic module, not everyone all.
  6. Separate results already achieved from outcomes still to be monitored
  7. Integrate Western, Southern and Eastern European evidence in one text
  8. Build a permanent, open platform instead of a time-limited project site
  9. Design content explicitly to be adopted by NGOs, not only universities
  10. Track real readership figures instead of claiming unmeasured reach.
