LEVEL 1. E-STAR – Standing Together Against Racism

BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.5. Discrimination, racism and sociocultural polarisation, including hate speech

What problem does it address?

Racist speech circulates openly in social media, mainstream media and populist discourse across Europe, but much discrimination stays invisible: microaggressions, cultural privilege and internalised racism. Youth workers often lack tools to recognise and address these hidden forms of racism with young people.

What does it propose?

E-STAR researched invisible racism across Italy, Spain, Hungary and Norway, then produced a Manual and Toolkit, a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for youth workers, and a 4-day international seminar, equipping youth workers to make invisible racism visible and promote good treatment.

Why is it an inspiring practice?
  • • Gives a precise name to forms of racism that both victims and perpetrators may not consciously notice.
  • • Collects real testimonies from young people and publishes a selection anonymously in the Manual as reflection cases.
  • • Runs a 4-day international seminar with 12 youth workers and experts before finalising the Manual and MOOC content.
  • • Pairs a printed Manual and Toolkit with a self-paced, freely accessible online MOOC.
  • • Coordinates one shared Manual across four distinct European youth-work cultures (Italy, Spain, Hungary, Norway).

What can visitors learn?
• How to define and recognise invisible racism: cultural privilege, internalised racism, microaggressions.
• How to collect and anonymise young people's own testimonies as teaching material.
• How to combine a seminar, a print Manual and an online MOOC into one coherent training pathway.
• How microaggressions can target ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, among other traits, and how to name each.
• How to design youth-work activities around "good treatment" as a constructive counterpart to anti-racism training.

LEVEL 2. EXPLORE BEST PRACTICE

Introduction

E-STAR (Erasmus+ Youth KA205, Feb 2020–May 2022) is led by Cazalla Intercultural (Spain) with Replay Network (Italy), Emberség Erejével Alapítvány (Hungary) and Terram Pacis (Norway). It researched invisible racism — microaggressions, cultural privilege, internalised racism — across the four countries, producing a Manual and Toolkit and a self-paced MOOC for youth workers.

  • Coordinating organisation: Cazalla Intercultural (Spain)
  • Participating countries: Hungary (HU), Italy (IT), Norway (NO), Spain (ES)
  • Duration: 2020-2022
  • BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.5. Discrimination, racism and sociocultural polarisation, including hate speech

Secondary Challenges

The Challenge

What social issue does it address?

Racist speech circulates openly in social media, mainstream media and populist discourse across Europe, but much discrimination against young people stays invisible: microaggressions, cultural privilege and internalised racism that both victims and perpetrators may not consciously recognise.

Why is it important?

Invisible racism is harmful precisely because it is normalised and often unconscious: it cannot be challenged if youth workers and young people do not have the concepts and tools to name it when it happens.

How does it contribute to the BRIDGE Challenge?

E-STAR builds youth workers' capacity to recognise and name invisible racism (microaggressions, cultural privilege, internalised racism), directly targeting the sociocultural polarisation this BRIDGE Challenge addresses.

How does it work?

A 4-day international seminar with 12 youth workers and experts fed into a Manual and Toolkit and a 5-module self-paced MOOC, developed collaboratively across four countries and freely available online for youth workers, educators and teachers.

What might inspire you?
Ideas for adaptation
  1. Give a name to racism that victims and perpetrators may not notice.
  2. Collect real youth testimonies and publish them anonymously in the Manual.
  3. Run a 4-day seminar with 12 youth workers before writing the Manual.
  4. Pair a print Manual and Toolkit with a self-paced online MOOC
  5. Cover microaggressions across ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation together.
  6. Offer video-lessons with subtitles in a second partner language
  7. Have each partner run its own local dissemination event for youth.
  8. Build the Toolkit around good treatment, not only awareness-raising.
  9. Coordinate one Manual across four different European youth-work cultures
  10. Make registration to the MOOC free and open to any youth worker.
