LEVEL 1. AGILE – Higher Education Resilience

BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.4. Fragmented management of cultural diversity and weak institutionalisation of intercultural dialogue

What problem does it address?

Refugee, displaced and exiled students face interrupted study paths, language barriers, uncertain recognition of prior and informal learning, limited academic networks and difficult transitions to employment or civic participation. Universities often respond through fragmented, temporary measures, leaving intercultural dialogue and diversity management weakly institutionalised.

What does it propose?

AGILE develops a transnational model linking diagnosis, curriculum design, three-tiered interventions, skills recognition, civic engagement, digital resources and crisis-management guidance. It helps universities turn ad hoc refugee support into coordinated, sustainable mechanisms for inclusion, intercultural dialogue and institutional resilience.

Why is it an inspiring practice?
  • It combines crisis response with long-term institutional change.
  • It treats refugee students as contributors, not only beneficiaries.
  • It links curriculum, skills recognition, civic engagement and support services.
  • It tests interventions before translating them into reusable guidance.
  • It connects universities, civil society and policy actors across Europe.

Introduction

AGILE is an Erasmus+ transnational project strengthening higher education resilience in refugee crises. It combines landscape analysis, consultations, curriculum principles, local interventions, skills recognition, civic engagement, digital resources, academia–society cooperation, country reports and crisis-management guidance. The project helps universities move from temporary support towards institutionalised intercultural dialogue and sustainable inclusion.

The Challenge

What social issue does it address?

Refugee crises expose fragmented higher education systems. Students may face interrupted documentation, language barriers, weak recognition of prior learning, limited support, social isolation and uncertain transitions. Responsibility is often dispersed across admissions, academic units, libraries, student services, NGOs and external actors, leaving inclusion dependent on temporary projects rather than stable procedures.

Why is it important?

Universities need durable mechanisms rather than improvised crisis responses. Coordinated diversity management can protect access to education, recognise skills, strengthen belonging and civic participation, and improve institutional preparedness for future displacement crises.

How does it contribute to the BRIDGE Challenge?

AGILE addresses BRIDGE Challenge A.4 by linking curriculum design, skills recognition, language support, civic engagement, digital tools, student services and university–society cooperation within one institutional approach. It turns intercultural dialogue from an isolated activity into a shared governance process.

How does it work?

AGILE combines landscape analysis and consultations with refugee students, staff and policymakers, then tests three-tiered interventions in universities. Lessons are translated into reports, open badges, virtual exhibitions, country studies, policy resources and crisis-management guidance, creating a cycle of diagnosis, experimentation, reflection and transfer.

What might inspire you?
Ideas for adaptation
  1. Coordinate refugee inclusion across university units.
  2. Use refugee student consultations to redesign curricula and support.
  3. Test multi-level interventions before institutionalising them.
  4. Recognise formal, non-formal and informal skills with open badges.
  5. Use cultural and linguistic projects to strengthen belonging.
  6. Link universities, civil society and business in crisis response.
  7. Turn emergency support into durable crisis-management procedures.
