LEVEL 1. EQUNI – EQ for Anti-Discrimination

BRIDGE Main Challenge: A.5. Discrimination, racism and sociocultural polarisation, including hate speech

What problem does it address?

The good practice addresses discrimination, racism, unconscious bias and hate speech in higher education. These challenges undermine equal opportunities, psychological safety and inclusion, particularly for marginalised students. Traditional approaches often overlook the emotional and behavioural dimensions of bias, limiting effective prevention and institutional change.

What does it propose?

The proposal integrates emotional intelligence into higher education to prevent discrimination and promote inclusion. It combines experiential learning, training, an interactive board game and a digital app with 12 micro-credentials. These tools develop empathy, emotional literacy and anti-discrimination competencies, supporting lasting institutional change and equal opportunities.

Why is it an inspiring practice?
  • • Integrates emotional intelligence into anti-discrimination education, addressing both the emotional and behavioural dimensions of bias.
  • • Uses innovative, experiential learning methods, including an interactive board game and a digital application.
  • • Promotes empathy, emotional literacy and critical self-reflection among students and university staff.
  • • Involves the wider academic community, supporting a systemic approach to inclusion and equality.
  • • Provides accessible, multilingual and reusable educational resources that can be adapted by other higher education institutions.
  • • Supports sustainable institutional change by connecting learning with university policies and governance.

LEVEL 2. EXPLORE BEST PRACTICE

Introduction

The good practice addresses discrimination, racism, unconscious bias and hate speech in higher education. These challenges undermine equal opportunities, psychological safety and inclusion, particularly for marginalised students, migrants and racialised communities. Universities often lack effective approaches to address the emotional and behavioural dimensions of bias, allowing structural inequalities and exclusion to persist in academic environments.

Secondary Challenges
  • A.1. Structural and intersectional inequalities that shape inclusion and social cohesion

The Challenge

What social issue does it address?

EQUNI addresses the social problem of discrimination, racism, and sociocultural polarisation, including hate speech, within higher education. It aims to reduce unconscious bias, microaggressions, and social exclusion by developing emotional intelligence, empathy, and anti-discrimination skills among students and university staff, promoting more inclusive and equal learning environments.

Why is it important?

EQUNI is important because discrimination, racism and hate speech undermine equality, inclusion and psychological safety in higher education. By developing emotional intelligence, empathy and anti-discrimination skills, it empowers students and staff to challenge bias, prevent exclusion and build respectful, inclusive learning environments.

How does it contribute to the BRIDGE Challenge?

EQUNI contributes to the BRIDGE Challenge by addressing discrimination, racism and hate speech in higher education. Through emotional intelligence training, gamified learning and micro-credentials, it promotes empathy, challenges unconscious bias and supports inclusive, equal and respectful learning environments across Europe.

How does it work?

EQUNI works through emotional intelligence training, interactive workshops, summer schools and gamified learning. Its mobile app and board game develop empathy, emotional regulation and awareness of bias. Twelve micro-credentials recognise acquired skills, supporting the integration of anti-discrimination practices into higher education.

What might inspire you?
Ideas for adaptation
  1. Boosts empathy and reduces subtle daily discrimination among students.
  2. Uses interactive games to help learners recognize unconscious prejudices.
  3. It promotes the development of emotional skills to cope with tension and conflict.

  5. Encourages students to reflect deeply on their own emotional responses.
Resources created

Equni

Educational resource

The EQUNI project offers a suite of open-access educational tools designed to foster emotional intelligence and combat discrimination in higher education. Its main resource is an interactive digital game available as a mobile app. This serious game places players in realistic university scenarios where they must identify bias, manage complex emotions, and practice empathy. In addition to the app, the project provides a comprehensive set of pedagogical materials. These include practical guides, training modules, and research reports developed by European university partners. All content focuses on soft skills, conflict resolution, and diversity inclusion. Since the project is co-funded by the Erasmus+ program, all toolkits, manuals, and digital tools are free for students and educators.
